When we think of Scandinavia, some may think of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. However, this is actually not entirely accurate. While all are indeed Nordic countries, only Denmark, Norway, and Sweden make up Scandinavia proper. Finland, like Iceland, is not actually a part of it. Indeed, Finland has its own unique identity, and the Finnish language is a big part of that.
Unlike its neighboring countries’ languages, Finnish is not a Germanic language; it belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family. Uralic languages have a different ancestral lineage, sharing kinship with languages such as Estonian, Hungarian, and several other tongues spoken across northern Russia.
The earliest written record of Finnish dates back to the 16th century; however, its origins reach much further back. Historians today believe that Finno-Ugric-speaking tribes migrated to present-day Finland from eastern regions around 4,000 years ago. Over millennia, these tribes evolved, interacted with neighboring communities, and gradually shaped the Finnish language into the striking language it is today.
One stand-out feature of the Finnish language is its phonetic nature: words are typically pronounced as they are spelled. Finnish grammar is equally intriguing. Instead of relying heavily on prepositions like many other languages, Finnish uses 15 noun cases, each serving different grammatical functions. Additionally, Finnish lacks gendered nouns, utilizing a single pronoun, “hän,” to mean both “he” and “she.”
Due to political and cultural interplay, many languages have influenced Finnish over the centuries. Chiefly among them is Swedish, which has influenced Finnish terminology in areas such as governance, technology, and culture. Russian impact is also evident, reflecting periods of close political engagement. In recent times, the global lingua franca, English, has made its mark, especially in areas like technology, pop culture, and business.
The Finnish language is more than just a mode of communication; it’s living evidence of Finland’s distinct history and cultural evolution. Nestled between East and West, Finnish not only connects Finns to their storied past but also to their evolving future.
